Mumbai my whore.

It is time; I shall soon have to bid her adieu… I may not be missed, after all, I am not her only customer and she is but a whore. We have developed a strange fondness for each other, a strange love-hate relationship. We used to love each other, now we love to hate each other. Yet when we meet after a long absence we behave like young lovers, she still feigns an orgasm. This cannot be helped; she has been abused for over three centuries. If not for her act, reprobate bastards like me would never miss her.

She is ugly, very ugly – but she was not always like this. She tries to hide her face behind a veil of brown chemical smog that hangs low. It does precious little to obscure those cancerous protrusions that have erupted in the distance. I watch her from across the bay; she still looks presentable (even glamorous) against the setting sun. Silhouetted, her many tall limbs are illuminated with an ethereal halo. Her many lambent eyes are reflected in the restive waters of the bay, distorted, they scare me. Although her poisonous breath has obscured the sun, she cannot steal its warmth. She is rich, thus derisive but generous. Her shiny grey locks crisscross each other; thankfully they don’t have split ends, otherwise those little lice like metal insects that run chug-chug a minute apart, along those parallel strands of steel, would be reduced to a heap of scrap metal. Thanks to the sodality of the callous, she is beyond repair now. Abused repeatedly, she has been reduced to a vegetative state, incapable of loving or being loved, oblivious to everything, even pain. She begs for war, famine, flood, a thermo nuclear cloud, anything that can release her from the clutches of human bondage. Her tenderloins have bled her; literary styptics have failed. I am still attracted to her, but I shall have to escape, I think I will, after all our love is not eternal, and she is but a whore.

Beautiful post Sunil!
Yes, this seething, sweltering, swathe called Mumbai is derisive and desirable at the same time.
